Mercenary Sicilian Tribesmen

All tribesmen are peaceful until their homelands are threatened.

Sicily's original inhabitants can be defined as three separate groups of Italians: the Sicani, the Siceli and the Elymians. Despite splitting the island between them, there is no evidence that they ever fought. Then, from around 750BC, Greeks began to arrive in Sicily and establish colonies, the most important of which being Syracuse. By this time, Greek culture was already prevalent in the Mediterranean and the local tribesmen adopted Hellenic ways with relative ease. As Syracuse grew into a large and powerful polis, its tyrants levied local troops for campaigns against Carthage (for territory) and Athens (for influence), looking to exploit the latter's weakened state following its war against Sparta. Due to the lack of warlike natives, and their unchallenged development on Sicily, Syracuse became one of the most well-known places in the ancient world until 212BC, when the Roman consul Marcus Claudius Marcellus besieged and sacked the city.
