Mercenary Aequi Swordsmen

Accomplished swordsmen, the Aequi are unafraid to face the Romans in battle.

The Aequi were an ancient Italic mountain tribe from an area within the Apennine mountains to the east of Rome. They predate the existence of the Romans, according to Strabo, and are first mentioned by Livy as the people from which Rome borrowed the formal act of declaring war. Several wars were fought between Roman and Aequi forces, with the first conflict occurring in 494BC, when their invasion of Latium was launched at the same time as the first secession by the plebs. As the Roman army advanced, the Aequi retreated from their newly-occupied territory and set up camp in the mountains, which they knew well. Rome's consul considered that an attack would have little chance of success, as the enemy's position was difficult to approach, but in the end the troops took matters into their own hands, advancing up the hill towards the Aequian camp. The Aequi were so stunned at the enemy's boldness that they abandoned their camp, relinquishing an abundance of booty to the Roman army. Numerous conflicts erupted between the city of Rome and the Aequi following that cowardly retreat, though neither side conquered significant territories until Rome's rise to power in the 3rd century BC.
