
Mercenary Brutti Veterans
Skilled tribal spearmen whose reputation on the battlefield is fully deserved.The Brutti were an ancient Italic tribe who occupied the southernmost Italian lands. Said to have been part of the Lucanian people, at some point the Brutii split from them and formed their own group. According to Dionysius, Brutti is the Lucanian word for 'slaves' or 'rebels', which explains the nature of the conflict between the two tribes. The Greek settlers of the Italiote League fought multiple battles against the Brutti, as they had raided and sacked nearby Greek settlements. Being Oscans in origin, the Brutti fought less with organised spear formations and more with short swords and axes, as well as supporting cavalry. Oscan warriors shared the same view of battle in that the best tactic was to achieve a quick victory; the charge would be led by warriors with two spears, one to be thrown after reaching the enemy and the other to use in close combat.
