Guardians of the Land

Armoured former palace guards who use ji polearms raided from their previous masters in the fight for the Great Peace.

Guardians of the Land have chosen the protection and pursuit of the people over the protection of their corrupt former masters. Once palace guards and bodyguards for the elite few, they have abandoned their posts for the Great Peace – but not before raiding their old warlord’s armoury!

It is an irony that the armour and ji polearms they use to unseat powerful warlords and their lackeys were often paid for by the very same, and that the training they use to defeat the enemy was received during their time guarding them.

Unit Abilities

  • Caltrops
    Simple nut husks, once trodden upon, cause extreme pain and slow movement.
  • Miasma
    The dense and tough undergrowth that plagues the jungles of the South is a hindrance to all those who try to penetrate into the heartlands of the Nanman.
  • Hollowed Square
    The unit forms into a hollow square, presenting spears and pikes to any attacker - particularly cavalry - on all four sides.
  • Loose
    The unit spreads apart, making it more difficult for arrows to hit them.
  • Spear Wall
    The unit presents a wall of spear-points to the enemy - a strong formation that allows the unit to advance slowly but safely whilst defending against charges.

Attributes

  • CHARGE REFLECTION VS. MOUNTED
    Reflects the charge damage of any mounted attacker back onto them when braced.
  • DISCIPLINED
    Does not suffer a morale penalty when the general dies. It can also rally after routing more often.
  • HIDE IN FOREST
    Can hide in forests.

Strengths & Weaknesses

  • Role: frontline
    Frontline units are tough and able to withstand a beating; they will hold to the end, while others around flee. They are also adept at charging into enemy frontline units.
  • Good in melee
    This unit is highly skilled in melee and wears its enemies down through sustained hand-to-hand combat.
  • Good armour
    Heavy armour protects this unit from most damage, but armour-piercing weapons will still pose a threat to them.
