Fervent Defenders

At the centre of the line, weapons extended, these warriors do not - cannot - flinch. Their resolve, implacable.

Every army must have a backbone - a core of dependable, if not exceptional, infantry to form the line of battle. Even in armies of more irregular composition, such as those fielded by the Yellow Turbans, this is a constant.

These warriors assume that mantle, striding into battle with no exceptional traits, something which in itself makes them exceptional, though they have decent armour and are armed with standard polearms. Battle forms around them; unsung heroes in a cause filled with the exceptional and the bold.

Unit Abilities

  • Caltrops
    Simple nut husks, once trodden upon, cause extreme pain and slow movement.
  • Miasma
    The dense and tough undergrowth that plagues the jungles of the South is a hindrance to all those who try to penetrate into the heartlands of the Nanman.
  • Hollowed Square
    The unit forms into a hollow square, presenting spears and pikes to any attacker - particularly cavalry - on all four sides.
  • Loose
    The unit spreads apart, making it more difficult for arrows to hit them.
  • Spear Wall
    The unit presents a wall of spear-points to the enemy - a strong formation that allows the unit to advance slowly but safely whilst defending against charges.

Attributes

  • CHARGE REFLECTION VS. MOUNTED
    Reflects the charge damage of any mounted attacker back onto them when braced.
  • HIDE IN FOREST
    Can hide in forests.

Strengths & Weaknesses

  • Role: anti-cavalry
    These units are strong against flanking units such as cavalry, so are best used to protect vulnerable flanks.
  • Good against mounted
    This unit is trained to fight against mounted enemies.
