Les auxiliaires venaient compléter les légions de la dernière république et du principat et étaient recrutés parmi les non-citoyens, d'habitude des volontaires de province ou de royaumes alliés. À cause de la pression causée par la guerre et son besoin croissant de troupes, surtout après la guerre sociale de 91 - 88 av. J.-C., le recrutement en provenance des provinces de Rome en pleine expansion devint une nécessité. Pour limiter le risque de rébellion, les auxiliaires étaient recrutés depuis une même province, mais stationnés autre part, loin de chez eux. Les auxiliaires pouvaient être de l'infanterie, de la cavalerie ou des troupes spécialisées comme les archers, et pouvaient conserver leur identité culturelle et leur équipement. Stationner dans des provinces romaines, sous domination romaine, romanisait inévitablement les auxiliaires, tout comme la récompense pour leur service : du terrain et la citoyenneté. Certaines unités finirent par avoir le titre de « civium Romanorum », signifiant que les soldats étaient des citoyens romains. Depuis le début de la campagne de Gaule de César, ils représentaient presque la totalité de la cavalerie romaine et durant le IIe siècle, leur nombre dépassa celui des légions.
