Native Militia

Pierwsi hoplici pojawili się na polach bitwy podczas wojen między greckimi miastami-państwami w VIII i VII wieku p.n.e. Na początku wojen z Persją większość hoplitów nosiła hełmy z brązu w stylu korynckim oraz napierśniki z tego samego materiału lub z utwardzanego płótna. Uzbrojeni byli we włócznie z żelaznym ostrzem i brązowym końcem dla równowagi oraz krótkie miecze. Nazwa "hoplici" pochodzi od używanej przez tych wojowników tarczy – hoplonu. Użycie hoplonu i włóczni spowodowało stworzenie formacji – falangi, składającej się zazwyczaj z ośmiu szeregów. W zwartym szyku każdy hoplita osłaniany był przez tarczę sąsiada, a razem tworzyli oni prawdziwą ścianę włóczni.

Chociaż początkowo wszyscy hoplici byli żołnierzami-obywatelami, wkrótce zastąpili ich zawodowi najemnicy; którzy stali się podstawową jednostką bojową świata greckiego. Później, za czasów Filipa II i Aleksandra Wielkiego, średnica tarczy została zmniejszona, a włócznię zastąpiła sarissa – pika o maksymalnej długości ok. pięciu metrów. Falanga hoplitów przyjęła się w wielu armiach ze względu na dużą skuteczność bojową.
