Roman Light Hoplites

In phalanx formation, a shield, a spear, and the man to the right of you are all that is needed.

The Roman Hoplite phalanx was more flexible than the Greek one, but still was not the best way to confront the more mobile Italic tribes and the marauding Gauls. Although the Romans had followed the ancient Trojan and Greek military traditions closely up to this point, they eventually eschewed phalanx combat and instead adapted their fighting style and equipment to suit the terrain upon which they fought and the particular threats they faced. Each Roman hoplite was armed with a round shield, sword, lance, crested helmet and greaves, enabling them to fight effectively in a number of different tactical situations.
