These swordsmen are equipped only with helmets and shields, as body armor would just burden a soldier in the hot climate. They are elite troops, and can be expected to fulfil their role as assault infantry as long as they are properly used.

Sebbene molti storici antichi utilizzassero il nome “Etiopia” per indicare tutte le regioni sub-sahariane, il termine era comunemente riferito alle regioni a sud dell’Egitto che diventarono il regno di Kush. I guerrieri di quest’area erano abili spadaccini eredi di una lunga tradizione di truppe d’élite iniziata sotto le dinastie degli Egizi e dei Nubiani. Sebbene andassero in battaglia indossando solo armature di stoffa, utilizzavano degli scudi simili ai thureos greci. Questi erano dotati di una maniglia centrale e offrivano maggiore protezione rispetto agli scudi di vimini o di legno usati dalle tribù sub-sahariane. Erano armati di una spada di tipo orientale, simile al khopesh, che più tardi si evolverà per diventare lo shotel, usato dai guerrieri di Axum in età più tarda. Questa era curvata in avanti, con una lama simile alla falce, progettata per colpire il nemico al di là del suo scudo, che poteva essere così agganciato e tirato via, o per perforare gli organi vitali del nemico.
