Durant l'Antiquité, la foule jouait un rôle important dans l'ascension et la chute des rois et des politiciens : une bête à plusieurs têtes qu'il fallait apaiser ou provoquer. Face à tant de violence, même des troupes aguerries pouvaient se sentir débordées dans l'espace étroit d'une cité.

Les foules se soucient peu du statut : ainsi l'apprit à ses dépens Pyrrhus, le grand roi épirote ; après avoir saisi le trône de Macédoine et essayé de contenir les révoltes dans la ville d'Argos, affrontant une nuée, il fut assommé par une tuile qu'une vieille femme lui avait lancée. Inconscient pendant un moment, un soldat argien profita de l'occasion pour le décapiter sur place.
