Levy Camp

Where levied citizens and subjects muster, and train to become soldiers.

Levies could be quickly mustered, outfitted and turned into an army whether citizens or subjects. Usually commanded by nobles or local dignitaries, levies supplemented the elite professional soldiers. Parthian armies, for example, were created by command of the king, who ordered his subordinates to muster troops and gather at an appointed time and place. These noblemen brought their households, attendant warriors, and hamspah - or levies. Over time there was a gradual move away from citizen and subject recruits to professional standing armies and greater use of mercenaries. Both classes were formerly levies who saw warfare as a career rather than a duty. In turn, this opened the way for promotion on merit rather than birth, creating armies loyal to generals rather than the old social order.

2	175	Missile Infantry / Missile Infantry / (Ara_Levy_Skirm) Istratutiya (Arabian Light Infantry) These lightly armed men are not much to look at, clad in simple attire and armed with the most rudimentary spears and shields, but they are far more capable soldiers than they seem at first glance. Years of both tribal skirmishing and warfare on behalf of their Sabaean rulers has made them into warriors of surprising merit and skill.

3	200	Melee Infantry / Spear Infantry / (Ara_Noble_Sword) Haghar Hayar (Sabaean Nobles) Hailing mainly from the splendid city of Maryab, these nobles would rather avoid combat, yet are well-trained and possess the best armour and weapons available: high-quality longspears, composite bows and strong shields. They are truly an elite force to be reckoned with, able to hold the line even against the heavy infantry of the Hellenes.

Armed with the traditional balta harbiye, a double edged axe, and light wickerwork and leather shields, these men form a light and unruly levy.

5	175	Missile Infantry / Missile Infantry / (Ara_sabean_archers) Hazin Shab (Sabaean Archers) The bow is a cheap yet effective weapon useful for both hunting and war. These men do not have the money to buy expensive equipment, as most of them are farmers from one of many small villages. They may not look like much, but they are valuable when used well on the battlefield.
