Ye Vanguard Crossbows

The crossbow is dangerous not only because of its innate destructive potential, but because it can be used with the bare minimum of training. Unlike a composite bow, which requires expert training to be used effectively, all a crossbowman need know is how to knock and ready the weapon; then it is as simple as pulling the trigger.

If the weapon is combined with a warrior of passing or even exceptional skill, then a cadre of crossbowmen become a fearful force on the battlefield!

Unit Abilities

• Hollowed Square
  The unit forms into a hollow square, presenting spears and pikes to any attacker - particularly cavalry - on all four sides.
• Mixed Missile
  The unit splits into missiles at the back, in rows, with melee in front protecting them.
• Smoke Screen
  Thick plumes of smoke obscure line of sight, making units seem temporarily invisible.
• Miasma
  The dense and tough undergrowth that plagues the jungles of the South is a hindrance to all those who try to penetrate into the heartlands of the Nanman.
• Loose
  The unit spreads apart, making it more difficult for arrows to hit them.

• DISCIPLINED
  Does not suffer a morale penalty when the general dies. It can also rally after routing more often.

  This unit can deploy outside the deployment zone.

  Can hide in forests.
• IMMUNE TO SCARE
  Immune to scare effects.

Strengths & Weaknesses

• Role: all-rounder
  Be it on the frontline, flanking, or when manning ordnance, this versatile unit excels in most positions.
• Good against armour
  This unit's missiles are heavily tipped to drill through the strongest armour, but will still be deflected by shields.
• Weak against cavalry
  This unit is very vulnerable to cavalry charges, especially to the flanks.
