La jabalina se cuenta entre las armas más antiguas usadas por manos humanas. Equipados con jabalinas y poco más, los escaramuzadores hostigaban al enemigo y se cebaban con las falanges de hoplitas antes de retirarse rápidamente. Esta era la típica táctica de todas las tropas con jabalinas que no llevaban armadura: atacar a distancia, para luego refugiarse tras la infantería con armadura pesada, o continuar atacando; pero siempre manteniéndose lejos del alcance enemigo. Este hostigamiento podía ser muy efectivo; en el 391 a. C., en la batalla de Lechaeum, un ejército de espartanos, que carecía del apoyo de los escaramuzadores y la caballería, sufrió grandes bajas a manos de unos atenienses armados con jabalinas que no quisieron enfrentarse a ellos en un combate cuerpo a cuerpo. Con el tiempo, los escudos se hicieron más comunes, como los usados por los peltastas griegos y tracios, por lo que estos soldados fueron desplazados por los tureóforos. Sin embargo, los jabalineros y otros soldados no regulares jugaron un papel importante en muchos ejércitos a lo largo de toda la antigüedad.
