Persian Spearmen

Sehr wenige Perser waren professionelle Soldaten und mit Ausnahme der früheren Unsterblichen Achämeniden und einigen Söldner-Hopliten waren sie nicht ausgebildet oder gedrillt. In Kriegszeiten wurden Truppen von reichen Grundbesitzern einberufen. Diese Heerbann-Infanterie bestand aus Schleuderern, Bogenschützen und Speerwerfern, die nur wenig Rüstung trugen und sich mit Schilden schützten. Aufgrund der örtlichen Bodenbeschaffenheit stellte eine gute Kavallerie das Standbein einer jeden östlichen Armee dar, und es gab mehrere Variationen. Die leichtere Kavallerie trug eiserne oder bronzene Schuppenpanzer über einer Tunika und zog mit Wurfspeeren und Schwertern in den Kampf, jedoch ohne Schild. Die berittenen Bogenschützen schwächten Infanterie mit schnellen, gnadenlosen Angriffen. Die schwere Kavallerie beinhaltete auch eine königliche Leibwache. Die Parther und ihre Nachfolger, die sassanidischen Perser, entwickelten eine Pferderüstung zum Schutz der wertvollen Rösser, aber auch der gefürchteten Kataphraktkrieger. Ihre Panzerung erinnert an die späteren mittelalterlichen Ritter.
