Kavallerie / Geschosskavallerie / (Eas_Atr_Elite_Cavalry) Khuveshavagane Shahvar (Persian Kinsmen Cavalry) Armed with javelins and a machaira, and commonly deployed in column formation, these cavalrymen are equipped for melee combat, like the later cataphracts, but they are also skilled with their javelins. Financed by the royal treasuries, they form a contingent of honour guards, known as the Kinsmen. |

Kavallerie / Schockkavallerie / (Eas_Atr_Elite_Lancers) Khuveshavagan (Persian Kinsmen Lancers) In the Achaemenid Empire, the Khuveshavagan were the most expensively attired cavalry in the world, and were indeed the sign of the equestrian power of the Persian Empire. After the conquests of Alexander, they have undergone several changes. With the royal treasuries withdrawn and the adoption of additional Macedonian conventions, the Khuveshavagan are no longer "Kinsmen" per se. Armed with a xyston and a machaira and heavily armored like the later cataphracts, this unit can mount a terrible charge, wreaking havoc upon the enemy. |

Nahkampfinfanterie / Speerinfanterie / (Eas_Atr_Guards) Arsti-Xsayaoiya (Satrap Guard Spearmen) These spearmen wear scale armour underneath their robes, and do not carry shields or helmets to encourage their comrades with their contempt for the enemy's attacks. Their lack of shields also gives them greater manoeuvrability to fire their bows. Having practiced on the hunt and in many wars, they are some of the deadliest archers in the world. |

Nahkampfinfanterie / Nahkampfinfanterie / (AOR_10_Sicily_Bruttian_Infantry) Pezoi Brettioi (Bruttian Infantry) The Bruttii come from the southern extremity of Italy. These Bruttian troops are dependable medium infantry. They carry two pila, which they throw before engaging in close combat with their swords. They are well armoured with a variety of bronze pectorales, typical of the Oscan warrior class. Their helmets show Greek and Italian influence, known as Italo-Attic. They fought for Pyrrhus during his invasion of Italy. |

Nahkampfinfanterie / Nahkampfinfanterie / (AOR_11_Celto_Hellenic_Infantry) Keltohellenikoi Thorakitai (Celto-Hellenic Infantry) These shock infantry are Celto-Hellenic 'men-at-arms,' Celtic warriors of a mixed culture. While they are not of especially great station, they are capable warriors fighting in the Celtic manner, in a motley combination of Hellenic and Celtic gear and dress: long Celtic shields, a Greek helmet, a Celtic sword, and javelins. They soften up an opponent with their javelins and charge an enemy once they're weakened with the great force of Celtic warriors. |

Nahkampfinfanterie / Nahkampfinfanterie / (AOR_12_North_Iberian_Illergetan_Soldiers) Milites Ilergetum (Illergetan Soldiers) These Iberians wear a helmet of typical Ilergetan design, with the characteristic neck guard, padded armour and large scutum adopted from the Gallic tribes across the Pyrenees. For weapons, they use javelins and a longsword, most likely imported from Gaul through the Greek colony of Emporion. Greek and Phoenician elements are also abundant in their culture, foreign motifs being common in their art. While not an elite contingent in the Ilergetan army, these troops are good quality. They are brave and relatively well-equipped, dependable line infantry. |

Nahkampfinfanterie / Nahkampfinfanterie / (AOR_2_Casse_Champions) Calawre (Casse Champions) All the Celtic cultures follow hero worshipping traditions, and the Britons are no different. Among the southern tribes especially, there are warriors of exceedingly great skill, who use Gallic equipment. The Calawre (Call-a-oo-re) are not typically considered to be recognized champions, but they are wealthy and skilled. They have good armour and high-quality Gallic swords. They are called champions more on account of their appearance than their abilities on the battlefield, where in reality they serve as an all-purpose heavy infantry. They are adept and professional warriors, but their cost - in terms of equipment and training - limits their numbers. |

Nahkampfinfanterie / Nahkampfinfanterie / (AOR_2_Siluri_Warband) Silurae Birnai (Silures Warband) The Silurae Birnai (Sel-oor-ay Bern-ay) are a tribe from the south of Cambria. Renowned for their ferocity, skill, and discipline, they offer up fine spearmen to their lord: braver than most others, and more sturdy and skilled. They are, for all intents and purposes, little more than local spearmen, but with greater training and skill. The Silures act as both anti-infantry and anti-cavalry soldiers, and can also be used to pepper an enemy at distance with javelins. They are disciplined and capable of standing in orderly lines, and use tight formations at times to absorb enemy charges. |

Like the Solduros of the Gauls, in the East the Scordisci have the Cordinau Orca (Kor-dee-now Urk-ah; Battle Boars), the guardians of their chief, and fearsome, strong warriors. The Scordisci are a rather extroverted Celtic people; they are so cosmopolitan that their enemies think them Thracians or Illyrians. |

Nahkampfinfanterie / Nahkampfinfanterie / (AOR_7_Alpine_Swordsmen) Kluddacorii (Alpine Swordsmen) Tribes from the Alps and some nearby territories have swordsmen of their own: the Kluddacorii (Klod-ah-kur-ee-eye; “Sword Band”). These men often wear little in battle, removing anything that might be a hindrance except trousers and shoes, and fight using a powerful charge after throwing their javelins in an attempt to overwhelm an enemy position or break a gap in an opposing line. Warriors from these tribes are high-spirited and very eager to fight given the chance, so they have decent morale, but their lack of armour is a detriment in a prolonged engagement, or if they are flanked. |

Seen as barbarians by the Romans and most of the southern Italic civilisations, they are equipped with a scutum, javelins, and a deadly light axe, similar to the Illyrian and Venetian tribes. These axemen are renowned as assault infantry. |

Geschossinfanterie / Geschossinfanterie / (AOR_10_Crossbows) Gastraphetes (Crossbow Infantry) This unit is the forerunner of medieval arbalesters. The gastraphetes crossbow, however, is more a handheld siege weapon than a battlefield weapon. Later, this weapon would find its way into the Macedonian army of Alexander, used during several sieges by specially trained soldiers to kill city defenders. |

This weapon is mentioned in a Polybian account about new weapons in the army of Perseus, shortly before the last open confrontation between the Macedonians and the Roman Republic (169-168 BCE)."""" |

Nahkampfinfanterie / Speerinfanterie / (AOR_1_Caledonian_Levies) Pictone Lugoae (Caledonian Levies) The Caledonians are a fierce people on the edge of the world. Beyond Caledonia stretches a great, empty ocean, and Caledonia itself is home to a rather isolated people. They are seemingly relics of a former era of Celtic history, they do not have great deals of iron, and so do not produce many swords. They instead fight with more practical weapons, spears, javelins, and slings. Balroae (Bal-ro-ee) are a vast number of men, of many ages and varying levels of experience. Seemingly fearless, and wild, their bodies are tattooed in esoteric spiral designs, their hair is spiked and red, and they are remarkably fearsome. They are very hardy and brave; their lifestyle demands it. Alone, a disciplined army would destroy them, but if incorporated into a more tactics minded commander, they may prove more useful. |

Kavallerie / Nahkampfkavallerie / (AOR_11_Celtic_Light_Cavalry) Vocontae Epos (Vocontii Cavalry) Vocontae Epos constitute the bulk of Vocontii cavalry. Well-trained compared to many of their enemies’ cavalry, they are invaluable to any army. They throw javelins at a distance, depleting an enemy before charging with their main spears. They are trained to throw javelins, charge, and withdraw repeatedly, and they do it well. A bronze helmet, shield, and light weapons may not seem the equipment of any particularly great cavalry, but they are a solid medium cavalry force, capable of running down routers, defeating light cavalry, and skirmishing if necessary. |

Living on both sides of the Khyber Pass, they are a part of the Arya races which stormed and conquered India, some 1500 years before. Their helmet is an evolved Boiotian one, and their primary cuirass is a quilted silk one. Their weapons are clearly Hellenic: a round aspis shield, a short kontos spear that could be held underarm in a couched stance, and a sturdy kopis for when the spear gives way."" |

Kavallerie / Nahkampfkavallerie / (AOR_5_Germanic_Cavalry) Reidonez (Germanic Cavalry) Reidonez ride small and sometimes poor quality horses, though they are excellent light cavalry. They are useful as scouts as well as skirmishers. However, like many Germanic warriors, they can lack battle-discipline and be overeager to enter battle against worthy opponents. This can lead them to be headstrong and difficult to restrain before a fight, as personal glory gained in battle is always welcome. Honour and standing come from fighting, and sometimes the urge for glory overwhelms their good sense! |
