Libyan Javelinmen

Der Wurfspeer zählt zu den ältesten Waffen der Menschheit. Außer Wurfspeere trugen Plänkler nur wenig Ausrüstung. Sie bedrängten ihre feindlichen Gegenstücke und die Hoplitenphalangen, ehe sie sich schnell zurückzogen. Dies war die typische Taktik aller ungepanzerten, mit Wurfspeeren bewaffneten Einheiten - sie griffen aus der Entfernung an und fielen dann hinter gepanzerte Infanterie zurück oder setzten ihre Angriff fort, während sie versuchten, einen sicheren Abstand vom Feind zu wahren. Diese Bedrängungstaktik aus der Ferne war oft höchst effektiv: 391 v. Chr. wurde in der Schlacht bei Lechaion eine Spartanerstreitkraft ohne Plänkler und Kavallerie durch mit Wurfspeeren bewaffnete Athener arg mitgenommen. Mit der Zeit wurden Schilde - wie die der thrakischen und griechischen Peltasten - immer verbreiteter, und diese wurden wiederum durch die hellenischen Thureophoroi abgelöst. Wurfspeerträger und andere irreguläre Truppen spielten aber in vielen Armeen der Antike weiterhin eine große Rolle.
