Hopliten-Bürgerwehr

Hopliten reichen zurück auf die Kriege der griechischen Stadtstaaten im 8. und 7. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Während der Perserkriege trugen die meisten Hopliten bronzene Helme, gewöhnlich nach korinthischer Art und einen Kürass aus Bronze oder verstärktem Leinen. Als Waffen trugen sie einen Speer mit Eisenspitze und bronzenem Gegengewicht und ein Kurzschwert. Ihren Namen verdanken sie jedoch dem Hoplon, dem runden Schild, den sie trugen. Hoplon und Speer bestimmten ihre Kampfmethode: sie formten eine Phalanx, die acht Ränge tief war. In dichter Formation war jeder Krieger vom Schild seines Nebenmannes geschützt: ein Schildwall mit Speerspitzen.

Ursprünglich waren alle Hopliten Bürger, doch mit der Zeit übernahmen Vollzeitsöldner und wurden zur Standardeinheit der griechischen Welt. Unter Philipp II. und Alexander dem Großen wurde der Durchmesser des Schildes reduziert, während der Speer sich in die fünf Meter lange Sarissa entwickelte. Viele Armeen übernahmen die Hopliten-Phalanx als taktische Einheit, weil sie sehr wirkungsvoll war.
