Einheimische Truppen unterstützten griechische Phalangen der ptolemäischen Dynastie. Die stolzen und mutigen Ägypter hatten mehrere Rollen, doch meist wurden sie als Peltasten eingesetzt, als Plänkler an den Flanken von Phalangen, oder als Infanterie auf schwierigem Terrain. Zwar hatten die Ptolemäer die Insignien der Pharaonen und die religiöse Infrastruktur übernommen, doch unter den Einheimischen gab es noch lange nach der Eroberung Unruhen. Dies war hauptsächlich darauf zurückzuführen, dass die griechischen Lehnsherren die Traditionen der Pharaonen nutzten, um ihre Schatzkammern auf Kosten des einfachen Volkes zu füllen. Der Kern der ptolemäischen Armeen bestand stets aus Griechen - bis zur Schlacht von Raphia im Jahr 217 v. Chr., als Ptolemaios IV. einer derart großen seleukidischen Streitkraft gegenüberstand, dass er sich gezwungen sah, etwa 30.000 einheimische Ägypter einzuberufen. Die Leistung der Ägypter in der Schlacht führte dazu, dass mit der Zeit mehr Einheimische in die ägyptische Armee aufgenommen wurden und breitgefächerte Aufgaben übernahmen, nachdem sie das Vertrauen der griechischen Kommandanten gewonnen hatten.
