练兵场

公民、正规军、动员兵及征召兵云集于此为战争而训练

凭借其公民数量之多，再加上雇佣兵的补充，希腊可以在战时迅速集结部队。他们的将军多是选拔出的官员，或自贵族中选出。在雅典，军事是由参与训练的青年男性和年长男性公民组成，由十名选拔出的军事长官率领。

这些人原本都是重装步兵，但仿照亚历山大大帝的模式，在后来的几个世纪里发展为剑盾手、轻方阵兵和轻盾兵。这次转变的同时，更加职业化的军队和雇佣兵部队也被投入使用。能够负担起马匹的富有公民组成希腊骑士或轻骑兵，而贵族骑兵也同样仿造亚历山大模式改革。雇佣兵，如色雷斯、西徐亚雅典弓箭警卫，或加拉太克利奥帕特拉皇家卫队，都是对正规军的补充

Due to a lack of proper training and cavalry traditions, these horsemen generally perform poorly.
