当战斗只关乎个人勇气、战争也不过是聚众斗殴的英雄年代一去不返后，军队被组织成纪律严明的作战单位。公元前700年，随着城邦间冲突加剧，外敌的威胁显露，希腊人首创重装步兵—由自备铠甲武器的自由民组成的步兵。士兵的装备并不统一，刻有各自家徽的盾和铠甲代代相传。然而，这些士兵有一件装备是共同的：希腊圆盾（hoplon），这也是他们名字（holite）的由来。这种圆盾不仅能保护持盾者，也能护卫左侧的战友。重装步兵后来组成方阵，俨然一面移向敌人的铜墙铁壁
