Leonidas Abidesi

Kral Leonidas, Spartalıların Spartalısıydı. MÖ 480 yılında, kendi koruması olan 300 hopliti, kuzeydeki Termopoli geçidine doğru, Serhas komutasındaki azametli bir Pers ordusuna karşı sürmüştü. Leonidas, Spartalıların savaşa gitmesini önleyen kutsal bir festival sebebiyle daha fazla kişi getiremiyordu. Serhas ise doğuda kimi bulduysa, Yunanlara karşı savaşmaya getirmiş gibi görünüyordu. Altmışlı yaşlarda olmasına rağmen Leonidas, orduyu dar geçidin savunması için bizzat yönetmiş ve kuvvetleri ihanete uğrayıp arkadan darbe alana dek geçidi iki gün tutmayı başarmıştır. Persler, herkesi öldürüp Leonidas'ın bedenini parçalamışlardır. Fakat bu savunma, Yunanlara zaferi getirecek zamanı kazandırmıştır. Leonidas'ın kahramanlığı, Spartalı olmanın simgesi haline gelmiş ve kalıntıları 40 yıl sonra çıkarılmış, ona bakan herkesi esinlendirmesi için de "Leonidyum" adlı bir anıt sunak inşa edilmiştir.
