Monumento di Leonida

Re Leonida era l’essenza dell’essere spartani. Nel 480 a.C. guidò 300 opliti, la sua guardia personale, a nord del passo delle Termopili, per affrontare un potente esercito persiano guidato da Serse. Leonida non riuscì a radunare un numero maggiore di uomini perché una festa religiosa, in quei giorni, proibiva agli Spartani di andare in guerra. Sembrava che Serse avesse portato con sé, e contro i Greci, tutto il popolo dell’est. Sebbene avesse già più di 60 anni, Leonida guidò personalmente l’azione di difesa di uno stretto passaggio, resistendo per due giorni prima che il proprio piccolo esercito fosse tradito e abbattuto dalle retrovie. I Persiani fecero una strage e mutilarono anche il cadavere di Leonida. Ma il suo comportamento fece guadagnare tempo ai Greci, consentendo loro di vincere alla fine. L’atto eroico di Leonida rappresentò il simbolo dell’essere spartano e, 40 anni dopo, i suoi resti furono riesumati. Venne poi costruito un santuario monumentale, il “Leonidaeum”, perché servisse d’ispirazione a tutti coloro che lo ammiravano.
