Монумент Леониду

Спартанский царь Леонид был первым среди равных. В 480 г. до н.э. с отрядом личной стражи из 300 спартанцев он выступил на север, в Фермопильское ущелье, чтобы остановить полчища персидского царя Ксеркса. В Спарте в это время справляли священный праздник, на время которого прекращались боевые действия: именно поэтому Леонид смог взять с собой лишь горстку гоплитов. Ксеркс же обрушил на греков всю мощь Востока. Леонид, которому тогда было уже за пятьдесят, лично возглавил оборону ущелья. Небольшие отряды спартанцев, феспийцев и фиванцев держались в течение двух дней, на третий день персы зашли им тыл. Они перебили защитников всех до единого и изуродовали тело царя Леонида. Столь дорогой ценой Леонид купил время, чтобы остальные греческие города-государства успели приготовиться к удару и, в конечном счете, одержали победу над персами. Леонид стал воплощением спартанских идеалов; через сорок лет после битвы его кости были перенесены из Фермопил в Спарту. В его честь было построено святилище Леонидайон, заставлявшее каждого спартанца и путника задуматься о его великом подвиге.
