經過多年斯巴達教育的培訓，斯巴達年輕人已經從七歲變成了如今的勇士青年，或者叫斯巴達的儲備，在青春的後幾年。從小與母親分離，是第一段的訓練，通常是住在斯巴達人公餐的大廳。他麼在那裡一起向長輩學習訓練，故意讓他們吃不飽，習慣於保持飢餓，然後教他麼智謀。這種訓練還會剝奪他們的衣服，一年只有一件紅色披風。如果他們偷竊被抓到，會受到嚴厲的懲罰，但是懲罰他們被抓到，而不是懲罰他們偷東西。在十八歲，他們變成儲備青年，加入後備軍兩年。以長矛和圓盾配備，以盔甲為衣物，他們會支持戰鬥中的年長的斯巴達人。一些被選擇的人也會被介紹到克里特意雅，一個秘密的組織培養間諜，從奴隸那裡偷殺。作為能力和使奴隸屈服的必要方法的測試，每年秋天都宣布對奴隸開戰，讓克里特意雅的活動合法化。
