Heilotes

Endurcis par des années d'entraînement à l'agoge, les jeunes Spartiates étaient élevés en guerriers dès l'âge de sept ans et devenaient des paidiskoi ou réserves pour Sparte dans les dernières années de leur adolescence. Après avoir été séparés de leur mère, la première étape de leur entraînement était le paides. Ils vivaient en communauté dans l'une des salles de syssitie. Ils s'entraînaient ensemble, apprenaient de leurs aînés et étaient volontairement sous-alimentés afin de les endurcir, les habituer à la faim et leur apprendre la débrouillardise. On les privait aussi de vêtements et on ne leur donnait qu'un habit rouge par an. Cela leur apprenait à voler, et ils étaient sévèrement punis si on les attrapait, parce qu'ils s'étaient fait prendre, pas parce qu'ils avaient volé à la population hilote. À dix-huit ans, ils devenaient des paidiskoi et rejoignaient l'armée en tant que réservistes pour deux ans. Armés de la lance hoplite et du hoplon avec une armure de tissu, ils soutenaient les Spartiates, plus âgés, au combat. Certains étaient introduits dans la kryptie, une organisation secrète qui espionnait, volait et tuait les Hilotes. Pour tester leurs compétences et soumettre les Hilotes, on leur déclarait la guerre tous les ans à l'automne ce qui rendait les actions de la kryptie légales.
