Judaioi Sphendonetai

(Jewish Slingers)

Even giants can be humbled by nimble slingers. These troops come from the shepherd nomads who used their slings to protect their herds.

Formacja procarzy powszechnie występowała w starożytnych armiach – nie bez powodu. Proca, jeden z najstarszych rodzajów broni miotającej, weszła do użycia w paleolicie.

Była łatwiejsza do wytwarzania i w porównaniu z wczesnymi, niekompozytowymi rodzajami łuku, często miała dużo większy zasięg. Skonstruowane z plecionego lnu, konopi lub sitowia proce posiadały miseczkę, w której umieszczało się pocisk. Na jednym z końców znajdowała się pętelka na palec, a na drugim – węzeł lub pasek, za który można było złapać. Procarz wkładał w pętlę środkowy palec i przytrzymywał drugi koniec kciukiem i palcem wskazującym. W trakcie rzutu puszczał jeden koniec procy szybkim ruchem nadgarstka. Szybkostrzelna i łatwa w użyciu proca stanowiła dla wroga nie lada kłopot.

Pociski wykonywano z gliny i ołowiu lub używano kamieni znalezionych w rzece. Ołowiane były w stanie pokonać nawet 400 metrów. Wykonywane ręcznie pociski często ozdabiano ironicznymi napisami, jak „Łap” albo „To dla ciebie”. Pociski trudno było dostrzec w powietrzu i choć brakowało im siły penetrującej, jaką miała strzała, to z łatwością mogły złamać kość lub wybić dziurę w pancerzu – jeśli zostały wystrzelone z bliskiej odległości. Jednym z najsłynniejszych ludzi, którzy polegli od strzału z procy, był rzymski konsul Paulus. Zginął on w pierwszych minutach bitwy pod Kannami, bez wątpienia trafiony przez jednego z balearskich procarzy Hannibala.
