Barbarian Pagus

Riches grow when people work together.

Roman and Greek historians often described the barbarian tribes as wandering people who lived for the hunt and knew little of farming and construction. Nothing could be further from the truth. A number of structures have been discovered that show that so-called 'barbarians' had a firm grasp of building techniques and were able to construct homes and defences that have survived for thousands of years. Brochs, dry stone buildings found in Scotland, survived the harsh weather and provide interesting information about the people who built them. Many were multi-storey dwellings and historians still debate their use: some believe they were defensive structures; others argue they may have been prestige buildings, symbols of wealth and power.

These units are skilled and versatile, and the Carpi are one of the most well-known fighting tribes among the Dacians. They are primarily mountaineers living on both sides of the Carpathians, which bear their name.

2	300	Melee Infantry / Melee Infantry / (Dac_Dii_Rhomphaiaphoroi) Dii Rhomphaiaphoroi (Dii Falxmen) The Dii, known for their barbaric fierceness and cruelty, have been known to massacre an entire city, including the animals. In battle they prefer the ambush, and their attack is strong enough to break even experienced formations. Equipped with a short falx, a Pelte shield and helmets of Thracian style, the Dii are good shock troops.

They are still equipped with a sica as main weapon, and still rely on iron-tipped javelins. They do not have helments, but wear a light and flexible composite leather jacket reinforced by bronze pieces."

4	300	Melee Infantry / Spear Infantry / (Dac_Moesian_Spearmen) Moisoi Doryphoroi (Moesian Spearmen) Moesia is a semi-mountainous, landlocked region. The Moesians are grouped into several tribes and are frequently at war against their neighbors. The choice weapons for these infantrymen are a spear and oval shield. They are sometimes willingly recruited as mercenaries by the Greeks and Macedonians, to avoid their raids on the frontier by denying them their best soldiers.

5	175	Missile Infantry / Missile Infantry / (Dac_Peucini_Skirmishers) Peukini Akontistai (Peucini Skirmishers) Peucini armies mainly consist of lightly equipped infantry. The vast majority of them are skirmishers, with maces and axes as secondary weapons. They have settled in the delta of the Istros (Danube), on an island called Peuce facing the Pontus Euxinus, hence their name.

6	300	Melee Infantry / Melee Infantry / (Dac_Sica_Warriors) Komatai Sicaphoroi (Dacian Sica Warriors) The Sicaphoroi, sica bearers," are recruited from the peasantry, and fight with a falx and javelins, in the common way of Getic and Dacian warriors. The Sica is the common short falx used by peasants for harvesting. It is not designed as a true weapon, but over time, a true military version has been developed as a main weapon by experienced warriors."
