Grand Temple of Baal
"All who enter know that they walk the domain of the Lord of Gods."The Grand Temple of Baal stood for centuries, a testament to the prosperity of Palmyra in its heyday. Although, according to an inscription the temple was dedicated to Baal in AD 32, it is highly likely that the building was further expanded and improved over the next few centuries. The interior of the temple was organised in the traditional eastern fashion, with spaces designated for altars to specific deities. The rest of the structure was influenced by Hellenistic and Roman architecture, as evidenced by its great colonnaded courtyard and crenelated roof. The temple boasted detailed bas-reliefs of celestial bodies and the signs of the zodiac. In Palmyra, Baal was associated with two other gods - the Sun God, Yarhibol, and the Moon God, Aglibol, the three forming a holy trinity that was worshipped as a whole at the Grand Temple.
