Court of Countless Kings
Every tribe must have a king, but who does he answer to?The establishment of a hierarchy amongst the Alamans went hand-in-hand with the process of ethnogenesis throughout the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. They started out as a group of unrelated Germanic tribes, the inheritors of the Suebi, but slowly began to unify as the need to migrate to a new home arose. Alamannic society was divided into ‘pagi’, or autonomous 'cantons' along the banks of the Rhine. Often, pagi would pair-off into kingdoms, which created a network of lesser Alamannic kings. In times of war, these rulers would unify under a single king to direct their efforts, as in the case of Chrocus, in AD306, who raided Roman territory along the Germanic frontier.
