Caledonii Spear Wall

Presenting an almost-immovable wall of deadly spearpoints, these men will stand and fight to the end.

During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, barbarian raiding parties essentially consisted of foot soldiers armed with whatever weapons or tools they could find. As contact with Rome increased, the armament and tactics that raiders employed slowly developed alongside it. When Julius Agricola encountered the Caledonii in battle in AD 84, the red-haired Celtic warriors used large swords and short shields to knock away arrows and javelins whilst charging. After defeat at Agricola's hand, and later to Septimius Severus, the Caledonii discovered that the swift cavalry flanking manoeuvres used against them worked extremely well and, although considered a cowardly tactic, a spear wall enabled them to withstand and counter a mounted onslaught.
