Steppe Lancers

A well-timed charge from a company of nomadic lancers may just be enough to save the tribe from destruction.

Développés par les talents de cavaliers de leurs ancêtres, les lanciers des steppes des tribus scythes, sakes ou sarmates étaient une unité de cavalerie lourde comparable, si ce n'est supérieure, à leurs homologues helléniques. Ils se protégeaient, ainsi que leurs montures, avec des armures en écailles, et utilisaient une longue lance appelée contus. Cela leur permettait de lancer des charges dévastatrices à la façon de la cavalerie des compagnons d'Alexandre. L'armure d'écailles était faite de corne, plus tard de métal, et permettait à ceux qui la portaient de défaire leurs adversaires occidentaux. Ils étaient toujours vulnérables aux formations serrées armées de pics ou de lances. Les unités d'archers proposaient une solution : des fantassins ou guerriers montés qui dispersaient les ennemis en envoyant une pluie de flèches. Durant la bataille de Carrhes en 53 av. J.-C, les archers parthes forcèrent l'infanterie en rangs serrés à s'étendre. Ceci permit aux cataphractaires de charger et de défaire les Romains trop sûrs d'eux malgré leur effectif quatre fois plus important.
