Pontic Archers

Les archers orientaux peuvent infliger de lourdes pertes s'ils sont utilisés en grand nombre. Leurs arcs composites leur donnent une bonne portée, une bonne précision et de la puissance de pénétration. L'arc composite est, comme son nom l'indique, composé de divers matériaux et les couches de bois, de nerfs, et de corne animale lui donnent un « ressort » très efficace et énergique. Entre les mains d'un archer raisonnable, une flèche d'un arc composite peut traverser une cotte de maille à une portée raisonnable. Toutefois, il ne fallait pas le mouiller. Les colles utilisées pour sa construction fondaient dans des conditions humides. Dans les déserts orientaux, ce n'était guère un problème, mais cela explique pourquoi l'arc composite ne fut jamais adopté en Europe.
