Pontic Spearmen

Le thureos était généralement un grand bouclier ovale et il devint largement répandu dans tout le monde hellénique vers le IIIe siècle av. J.-C. Fait en bois et couvert de peau, il différait du hoplon grec plus ancien de par sa poignée centrale qui était protégée par une barre verticale sur toute la longueur. Il pouvait encore être renforcé par l'ajout d'une large bande de métal qui protégeait la poignée et la main du porteur. Inspiré des boucliers ovales et rectangulaires des Celtes, certainement à travers le contact avec des Galates émigrés, on pense que son usage s'est répandu en premier chez les tribus illyriennes et thraces avant d'être adopté par les Grecs. Malgré sa grandeur, le thureos était quand même léger comparé au hoplon traditionnel et fut adopté par les peltastes plus lourdement protégés. Tirant leur nom du bouclier, ces thurephoroi pouvaient se battre comme des peltastes, tiraillant avec des javelots, mais pouvaient aussi se mettre en formation similaire à la phalange, avec leurs grands boucliers et leurs lances plus grandes. Le thureos fut utilisé continuellement par diverses armées du fait de sa nature polyvalente. Cela inclut les auxiliaires et la cavalerie des légions romaines ultérieures.
