Hoplite/Pike Infantry

Strong formations make these troops deadly from the front but vulnerable if flanked. They are highly effective against cavalry.

During the Halstatt age, they were mostly heavy swordsmen, but their fighting techniques began to change, and they now favour the spear and close formation.

In general terms, the Ambactes are chosen from the best in the warrior class and attached, possibly to the death, to their master, benefitting from his wealth. They are probably the very first in the warrior class to dream about buying chainmail.

3	300	Melee Infantry / Hoplite/Pike Infantry / (cel_tyl_medium_spearmen) Cingetes (Professional Spearmen) These professional spearmen, literally "those who march together," are the backbone of the Celtic infantry line. Well-disciplined and well-equipped as warriors, they use a long lancia (three meter-long spear), and a longsword as a melee weapon. They wear a helmet but no armour, or perhaps an affordable leather jacket under their tunic.

4	200	Melee Infantry / Hoplite/Pike Infantry / (cel_tyl_noble_inf) Arjos (Celtic Nobles) These Arjos have the best equipment available, including impressive helmets, highly decorated in order to be seen in the melee like a standard. They are numerous, and choose to fight on foot rather than from the safety of a horse. This attitude is less motivated by the quest of personal glory, than an immediate choice to be in the heart of their troops to motivate them.

9	256	Melee Infantry / Hoplite/Pike Infantry / (AOR_29_chalybes_spearmen) Chalyboi Doryphoroi (Chalybes Spearmen) The armour of these spearmen consists of a leather helmet, greaves, and a long quilted linen tunic. Instead of the leather pteryges of a Greek corselet, the Chalybes have plaited cords to provide protection below the cuirass. Their main weapon is a long spear. They are useful against light infantry, but their lack of shields means they are vulnerable to enemy arrows.

11	200	Melee Infantry / Hoplite/Pike Infantry / (AOR_33_akkadian_elite_guards) Erin-mesh Uriki (Akkadian Elite Infantry) These Akkadian infantrymen wear some armour, helmets and light thorakes, and all carry aspis shields to go with their long spears. The Erin-mesh Uriki are drawn from the citizen rolls of Akkadian cities, and are customarily employed as guardians of cities and temples, and as emergency militia during wartime.

Their weapons include the dory, xiphos, and the classic large aspis shield. However, they are more mobile than classic hoplites, useful as flanking heavy infantry rather than a central phalanx unit.

Some of them are roughly equivalent to the Oscan infantry, but others are equipped as hoplites, with the usual panoply. Like the Campanians, they can give a good account of themselves as medium-heavy support infantry.
