Hoplite/Pike Infantry
Strong formations make these troops deadly from the front but vulnerable if flanked. They are highly effective against cavalry.

Melee Infantry / Hoplite/Pike Infantry / (thr_pikes) Thrakioi Pezhetairoi (Thracian Pikemen) The backbone of the Thracian army is mainly composed of native Macedonians, some being battle-hardened veterans from the successor conflicts. Melee Infantry / Hoplite/Pike Infantry / (thr_reformed_hoplites) Thrakioi Iphikratous Phalangitai (Thracian Iphikratean Pikemen) Iphikrates' main reform was to equip his soldiers like lightweight hoplites. They wear the equipment of the peltast, with boots and also a light leather or linen cuirass, instead of the traditional muscled bronze cuirass, in addtion to a light Thracian or Phrygian helmet. Their weapons include a sword, a longer spear, and a light pelte shield instead of the heavy hoplon, so they can handle their spears with the left hand as well, which allows these units to wield sarissas. |

They are equipped like heavy hoplites, but some of them wear only their tunic with their heavy equipment. |

Melee Infantry / Hoplite/Pike Infantry / (AOR_29_chalybes_spearmen) Chalyboi Doryphoroi (Chalybes Spearmen) The armour of these spearmen consists of a leather helmet, greaves, and a long quilted linen tunic. Instead of the leather pteryges of a Greek corselet, the Chalybes have plaited cords to provide protection below the cuirass. Their main weapon is a long spear. They are useful against light infantry, but their lack of shields means they are vulnerable to enemy arrows. |

Melee Infantry / Hoplite/Pike Infantry / (AOR_9_Campanian_Hoplites) Kampanioi Hoplitai (Campanian Hoplites) These men are typical hoplites, wearing feathered or crested helmets, along with greaves and breastplates. Their weapons include the dory, xiphos, and the classic large aspis shield. However, they are more mobile than classic hoplites, useful as flanking heavy infantry rather than a central phalanx unit. |

Melee Infantry / Hoplite/Pike Infantry / (AOR_9_lucanian_hoplites) Leukanoi Hoplitai (Lucanian Hoplites) Lucanian troops have fought in the ranks of Pyrrhus' army. Some of them are roughly equivalent to the Oscan infantry, but others are equipped as hoplites, with the usual panoply. Like the Campanians, they can give a good account of themselves as medium-heavy support infantry. |
