勇敌万人的迦太基人受训成为重装步兵

神圣军团是历战枪兵的方阵,在迦太基兴起,训练武装为古希腊重装步兵。相较于盟友、奴隶或者雇佣兵这种迦太基军队的常规编制而言,他们由于是从公民中招募的而独一无二。他们由高尚而富有的公民中选拔,训练良好并且遵守纪律。凭借他们的社会地位,他们可以负担起整套的重装步兵装备:一副青铜胸甲、护胫、头盔以及圆盾。绝大多数神圣军团士兵都是白种人。他们装备有长矛,长矛为铁制矛头、青铜矛尾以保持平衡,他们也会带有直剑。神圣军团战斗勇猛,即使战败时也会战至最后一刻,在公元前340年的克里米苏斯会战他们就证明过了。然而他们自那之后就未能恢复满员,同时,迦太基与罗马的战争的压力使得神圣军团为雇佣兵所取代,靠迦太基的贸易财富来雇佣。这些部队中还有为数不多的迦太基公民和利比亚-腓尼基人,然而历史上的神圣军团再也未曾重现了
