Alae Skirmishers
Harassing units with javelins from horseback is an ideal way to frustrate your opponents.During the Principate period of the Roman Empire, the mounted 'alae' constituted its elite cavalry forces. Unlike the allied foederati cavalry, these men were regulars, trained and paid by the state. A typical alae horseman was paid a fifth more than a standard citizen Legionary. Experienced in intricate manoeuvres whilst keeping formation, they were suitable for large-scale military endeavours, during which they were the primary cavalry escort for the infantry-heavy Legions. The alae riders typically wore heavy armour and were armed with a short lance, javelins or sometimes bows. Although their armaments were subject to change, all alae cavalry carried a spatha sword and the ubiquitous pugio dagger. While Rome's primary strength was still its infantry, a strong mobile cavalry corps was used as a quick response to external threats.
