

Caledonii Oathsworn Bodyguard
Great and terrible oaths should be kept, in blood and by the sword.When a young Celtic warrior wanted to prove himself and attain glory, it was common practice to join a veteran's retinue and fight alongside him. Such was the hierarchy of the warband - the stronger the warrior, the more men looked to him in battle. With every encounter, the men developed loyalty towards each other as brothers in arms. As a final rite of passage to elite warrior status, the bravest fighters swore an oath to their chieftain - to always be loyal, to fight together and to die before letting harm come to their leader. This relationship was a sacred bond - no 'Oathsworn' would leave the battlefield before his chief had retired, and abandoning the body of a dead chief was irredeemably shameful. In return for this loyalty, the chief treated these men with the highest regard and honoured them with gifts.
