La moneda se convierte en lo que necesite quien la porta.Si bien el uso de la moneda se originó en Lidia, en Anatolia, los griegos no tardarían en adoptar su uso y emplearla para pagar a los mercenarios y para adquirir bienes provenientes de occidente. Aunque estas monedas carecían de significado entre los bárbaros, se las consideraba símbolos exóticos de estatus. Así, cuando llegaron las artes de forjado, estas se utilizaron principalmente para crear copias exactas de las monedas griegas —sobre todo con motivos filipescos y alejandrinos—.
Cuando comprendieron el significado económico de las monedas, los herreros locales de las tribus bárbaras comenzaron a incorporar estilos nativos y temas cada vez más abstractos como, por ejemplo, gigantes, cabezas cortadas y dioses.
