Warrior Lodge

An artistic eye can be useful and profitable.

Many Roman writers attempted to reduce the Celts to a crude people who lived for war and little else. When describing the Celts of the Po Valley, Polybius commented that “their lives are very simple, and they had no knowledge whatsoever of art or science”. Due to archaeological finds we know this to be an oversimplification of a very complex society, and beautiful examples of Celtic art found all over Europe tell a very different story. Items like the Gundestrup Cauldron and the Desborough Mirror show that the Celts had excellent metalworking skills, an artistic eye and the ability to tell stories through their art. The intricate detail on the cauldron was preserved by the peat bog in which it was discovered. The glass used in the figures' eyes gives us some idea of the excellent artistic and craft abilities of the men who made the Cauldron.

Skythioi Doryphoroi
(Scythian Spearmen)

Scythian spearmen are raised from settled groups of formerly nomadic people. As they abandon their traditional way of life as nomadic herdsmen, more and more of their warriors become infantry. The equipment of these troops reflects substantial Greek influence, which is quite evident in, for example, the large oval thureos shields that these infantrymen carry.

Skuda Baexdzhyntae
(Scythian Light Horsemen)

These light riders are from the Scythian tribes to the north of the Pontus Euxinus (Black Sea). They rely on a long sword, bow and shield (typically, the crescent shaped, leather faced, taka shield of the Scythian peoples) and are some of the most effective light horse available. These light horsemen will prove of little value in a hand to hand clash against disciplined infantry and care should be taken not to waste them in such a way.
