Heavy Horse Studs

Heavy horses, bred for stamina and strength as heavy cavalry mounts.

Eastern cavalry had both Hellenistic and Persian influences, with the more easterly states favouring cataphract-style scale armour, in the Parthian fashion, protecting both rider and horse. As a result, the Seleucid kings that followed Alexander maintained two 1,000-man units of elite cavalry, the Hetairoi, modelled on Parthian cataphracts. Following the Alexandrian and Parthian examples, heavy cavalry were a hammer in the tactical toolbox of eastern generals, driving off their opposite numbers before outflanking and exploiting vulnerable infantry flanks. This was helped by the use of a wedge formation to drive into the enemy and break their ordered lines.

The Epigonoi are thoroughly Hellenised Persians, a fusion of Hellenic and Iranian traditions brought about by Alexander's conquests.

2	120	Cavalry / Melee Cavalry / (Eas_Atr_Median_Medium_Cavalry) Asabaran-i Madaen (Median Medium Cavalry) These excellent medium cavalry are capable of skirmishing, charging, and fighting fairly well in melee. They are raised from the old Persian estates which were not seized by the Macedonian invaders.

3	120	Cavalry / Shock Cavalry / (Eas_Atr_Medium_Lancers) Asabaran-i Aturpatekan (Atropatenean Lancers) These horsemen ride to war in scale armour, wielding long spears and axes in the old Persian style. They form a reliable medium cavalry unit for which a good commander will find many uses.

4	120	Cavalry / Melee Cavalry / (Eas_Atr_Medium_Melee_Cavalry) Persae Hippeis (Persian Medium Cavalry) These medium cavalrymen are a versatile task-force able to perform a wide range of roles in battle. They are armed with a thrusting spear, but they are not well-suited to take on heavier cavalry or elite infantry formations, and their loyalty is measured only in weight of gold.
