Taksashila Minor Settlement (Silk) Level 3
Eastern Small Town (Silk)
A thriving community with trade to attract new settlers.Small farming settlements were the backbone of ancient civilisations in the east, feeding the great cities such as Antioch and Seleucia. Situated to exploit good land, fishing, mining or quarrying, defence was often too expensive to be more than a secondary consideration. As the populations of the great cities increased, surplus food from these farming communities became essential. As small military garrisons were positioned to protect valuable resources and trade routes, there was a slow growth of many hamlets into towns, as people and trade passed.

Missile Infantry / Missile Infantry / (AOR_26_Bac_Javelinmen) Zubindar-i Suguda (Sogdian Javelinmen) These men risk their lives by closing with the enemy while carrying only the lightest of equipment. Most armies use poorly equipped levies as skirmishers, very often as javelinmen, since these troops require relatively little training and financial investment, relying mostly on widespread natural skills and scant gear. |

Cavalry / Missile Cavalry / (AOR_26_Yuezhi_Archers) Jamsya Yukhuna Duna Purma (Yuezhi Horse Archers) These horsemen make up the backbone of the Yuezhi cavalry, as horse-archers. As such, they are armed with extremely powerful composite bows of the asymmetrical, or "Hunnic" style. Their qualities as archers are offset by their performance in melee, as they are lightly armed and wear little to no armour. Used wisely, these mounted archers are a danger to any ill-prepared enemy. |

Cavalry / Melee Cavalry / (AOR_5_Germanic_Cavalry) Reidonez (Germanic Cavalry) Reidonez ride small and sometimes poor quality horses, though they are excellent light cavalry. They are useful as scouts as well as skirmishers. However, like many Germanic warriors, they can lack battle-discipline and be overeager to enter battle against worthy opponents. This can lead them to be headstrong and difficult to restrain before a fight, as personal glory gained in battle is always welcome. Honour and standing come from fighting, and sometimes the urge for glory overwhelms their good sense! |

Melee Infantry / Spear Infantry / (ind_levy_spearmen) Sainika (Indian Levy Spearmen) Most of these warriors are dressed in their everyday clothing, which includes loincloths, skirts, and short-sleeved shirts. The majority fight bare-chested, however. Spears and shields are cheap and easy to make, and spearmen make up a large part of the melee infantry. |

Missile Infantry / Missile Infantry / (ind_skirmishers) Ksipati Sainika (Indian Skirmishers) Most of these light skimishers are dressed in their everyday clothing, which includes loincloths, skirts, and short-sleeved shirts. The majority fight bare-chested, armed with daggers and throwing spears. These troops require relatively little training and financial investment, relying mostly on widespread natural skills and scant gear, while still providing some useful service. |

Missile Infantry / Missile Infantry / (ind_slingers) Kseptrayah (Indian Tribal Slingers) These slingers from the mountain and forest tribes carry small leather slings, just as easily used for hunting game as for hunting men. They carry no shields, as they do not intend to close with their prey until already downed. Nonetheless, they carry simple wooden clubs, useful for disposing their injured prey, but which can also be used for self-defence in melee, should the situation call for it. As speed and flexibility are key to their battlefield tactics, they wear no cumbersome armour, and their dress is the same simple clothing that they would wear on the hunt, or out foraging. |

Melee Infantry / Spear Infantry / (ind_spearmen) Kauntikas (Indian Spearmen) These men, armed with spears and shields, are the mainstay of the Indian infantry. Some of the warriors wear a simple armoured corselet, made from strips of hardened leather. Their spears, which they wield in an underarm position, are made of wood or bamboo, with iron spearheads. |

Melee Infantry / Melee Infantry / (ind_tribal_swordsmen) Thazhvar Sirupadai (Dravidian Sickle-Swordsmen) The Dravidian Hindu tribes, inhabiting regions of southern India, are fearsome warriors, wielding the Aruvaazh (or Sickle-Sword), a single-sided heavy sword. They wear no armour, much like the North Indian tribes. These men are more spiritual and fanatical, hence they are very warlike in nature. Their attitude gives them tirelessness and ferocity in battle. |
