Warlord's Hold

With great power comes great responsibility.

Many of the tribal leaders who fought the Romans are remembered as noble adversaries who stood against the Roman war machine but were ultimately crushed by it. There were those who chose to accept Roman rule in order to protect their people. Cartimandua, queen of the Briganti tribe in Britannia, chose to ally herself with Rome after witnessing the devastation of the southern British tribes. Fleeing for his life, the leader of the Catuvellauni tribe, Caratacus, sought refuge with Cartimandua. Rather than break her alliance with Rome she gave up Caratacus to the Romans in chains. Her peace was eventually broken when her ex-husband rose up against her, plunging her people back into war with Rome.

Appea Gaedotos
(Phalanx Spearmen)

The Alpine tribes were and indeed continue to be greatly influenced by the Hellenes and Italians. As such, the Appea Gaedotos (Ap-ee-ah Guy-doo-tos) deploy a form of spear wall in combat, similar in style to that of the Hellenic peoples. They are solid soldiers, and should be able to stand well in battle. After all, a phalanx is always good when combating mounted enemies and lightly armed infantry.

Keltohellenikoi Hoplitai
(Celto-Hellenic Hoplites)

These shock infantry are Celto-Hellenic 'men-at-arms'. Whilst they are not of great station, they are sturdy warriors who fight in the Celtic manner. Their weapons and attire reflect a combination of Hellenic and Celtic cultures insofar as these warriors possess Celtic longshields, spears and javelins, but sport Greek helmets. In battle they will soften up their opponents with javelins and, once they're weakened, will charge them with all the great brunt and force of a Celtic assault.
