A warrior cannot ride a sheep into battle!

Horses played an important role in Celtic society, both spiritually and practically. Many Roman writers freely admitted that the Celts were excellent horsemen, and they went as far as calling Celtic mercenaries the best cavalry in the Roman army. The Romans even adopted a Celtic deity in the hope that she would bestow the equine knowledge and skill of the Celts upon Rome. Epona is one of very few deities to be accepted into the Roman pantheon without change, although her role did develop over time. Eventually, she provided protection for all those who worked with horses and not just the animals themselves. She was a popular deity among the Roman cavalry, and her cult spread across Europe wherever the Romans had cavalry garrisons.

1	120	Cavalry / Melee Cavalry / (Scy_armoured_lancers) Skythioi Lonchophoroi (Scythian Armoured Lancers) These armoured lancers wield a lancia: a one-handed lance, shorter than the kontos, mainly used by the Sarmatians. They also have a light thureos shield of wicker backed with leather, covered with painted linen, as well as leather and scale armour, and modified Greek-style helmets.

2	120	Cavalry / Missile Cavalry / (Scy_heavy_horse_archers) Skythioi Kontophoroi Hippotoxotai (Scythian Heavy Horse Archers) These armoured horse archers fight with a versatile panoply: the bow, a battleaxe, and a kontos lance. For the most part, they wear flexible Greek-style leather armour, with scales made from iron, bronze, or more commonly bone or horn, which is easier to collect and shape.

4	120	Cavalry / Missile Cavalry / (Scy_noble_bodyguards) Skythioi Basilikoi Somatophylakes (Royal Scythian Bodyguards) In a few words, these are the finest cavalrymen in the West, taking into account the western Scythians, from the Pontic Steppe to Thracian and Germanic lands. These elite nobles are not only skilled with their kontos lances, but are more versatile warriors, using bows, longswords and sagaris axes.

5	120	Cavalry / Missile Cavalry / (Scy_noble_cavalry) Skythioi Aristoi Hippotoxotai (Scythian Noble Horse Archers) The Scythian nobles are superb horsemen, with finely crafted bronze and even gold scale armour, their equipment highly and sumptuously decorated with golden animals. They wear a Greek-style scaled linothorax, a small crescent or rectangular shield made with iron lamellar plates, greaves, and Greek helmets.

6	120	Cavalry / Missile Cavalry / (Scy_reform_horse_archers) Skytho-Sauromatai Hippotoxotai (Scytho-Sarmatian Horse Archers) As the Scythians progressively fall under Sarmatian influence, they adopt the equipment of their enemies. The Sarmatised" Scythian kontos bearers are a pure product of this evolution. They still use close-combat weapons and their bow as the main armament in any occasion."

7	120	Cavalry / Missile Cavalry / (Scy_reform_mounted_peltasts) Skytho-Sauromatai Hippopeltastai (Scytho-Sarmatian Mounted Peltasts) Although the horse archer is the backbone of any nomadic army, mounted javelineers are used as well, mostly in close quarters on rough terrain, in ambushes and night raids. Scythian and Sarmatian heavy mounted skirmishers carry large shields, a bunch of javelins, and leather and scale armour. They are skilled and can also fight dismounted with various weapons, but the most common are the sagaris battle-axe and the akinakes.

8	120	Cavalry / Missile Cavalry / (Ste_Horse_Skirm) Skuda Baexdzhyntae (Scythian Light Horsemen) These light riders are from the Scythian tribes to the north of the Pontus Euxinus (Black Sea). They rely on a long sword, bow and shield (typically, the crescent shaped, leather faced, taka shield of the Scythian peoples) and are some of the most effective light horse available. These light horsemen will prove of little value in a hand to hand clash against disciplined infantry and care should be taken not to waste them in such a way.

9	120	Cavalry / Melee Cavalry / (Ste_Noble_Lancers) Skuda Uaezdaettae (Scythian Noble Cavalry) The Skuda Uaezdaettae, or Scythian nobles, fight in a manner almost more similar to the Greeks than their nomadic ancestors, preferring the xyston or spear to archery, even though they still carry composite bows. Equipped with a fine linothorax reinforced with metal scales, long pteryges, and a Greek-style bronze helmet, they are still a deadly cavalry force, though not to the extent they once were.
