Temple of Dhu Shara
The mighty Dhu Shara, chief among the gods, must have a suitable home.Dhu Shara' literally meaning 'Lord of the Mountain', was the chief deity in the Nabataean pantheon. He was represented by a rectangular block of black stone upon which the blood of the unfortunate sacrificial victims was spilled. The stone altar was mounted atop a golden pedestal and the whole sanctuary glowed with gold and votive offerings. The black stone of Dhu Shara was taken to the Ka'aba and became the focus of a cult there, which persisted for many centuries, even after the rise of Islam in the region during the 7th century AD. As Hellenistic culture begun to influence the Nabataeans, they started to adopt Greek traditions, finding parity between the Greek pantheon and their own. As such, Dhu Shara gained human form, and was equated with both Zeus and Dionysus as the leader of the Nubian gods.
