一个为了共同的目标和理想建立起来的小社区小型的农业定居点是古代东方文明的骨干,这些定居点供给着像安提俄克和塞琉西亚这样的城市。定居点都位于适宜耕种,打渔,开矿或采石的地方,设立定居点时防御因素通常是不被考虑的。
当大城市的人口增长以后,从这些农场获得食物供给就尤为重要了。当有小型驻军被派驻进来保护有价值的资源和贸易路线,人员和商队的过往,小型农庄也会慢慢成为城镇
