Rekem

The jewel of the desert.

Known to us as Petra, this city was originally named Raqmu by the Nabataeans. Although famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system, another name for Petra is the 'Rose City' due to the colour of the stone from which it was carved. The Nabataeans took advantage of Petra's proximity to regional trade routes to establish it as a major trading hub. In AD106, when Cornelius Palma was the Roman governor of Syria, the part of Arabia under Petra's control was absorbed into the Roman Empire as part of Arabia Petraea, and the city became its capital. With the advent of Roman rule, the native dynasty came to an end, but the city continued to flourish. It was around this time that Petra's Roman road was built. A century later, during the time of Emperor Alexander Severus, when the city was at the height of its splendour, its economic issues seem to have been resolved. No more sumptuous tombs were constructed, owing apparently to a relatively-sudden catastrophe - invasion by the neo-Persian Sassanid Empire. Meanwhile, as Palmyra grew in importance and attracted trade away from Petra, the latter declined.
