Etchmiadzin Cathedral

Among other things, Armenia is known for being the first state in the world to adopt Christianity as its official religion. According to tradition, this happened after the Christian priest, Gregory the Illuminator, healed the mental malady of the Armenian king, Tiridates III, who had been a notorious persecutor of Christians up to that point. Having recovered his health his eyes were opened and he saw the error of his ways, urging his people to follow the teachings of the one who had cured him. Soon afterwards, in a vision, Gregory beheld Jesus Christ himself as he descended from heaven with a hammer made of gold, with which he pointed out the location of a temple that was to be built. Under Gregory's guidance, the first cathedral was constructed at Vagharshapat, the capital, probably between AD 301 and AD 303 and given the name 'Etchmiadzin' or 'The Descent of the Only Begotten Son of God'.
