There were Christians in Armenia almost from the time of the new religion's inception. The bible states that, after Jesus sent out his apostles on a mission to spread the faith across the land, two of them - St Thaddeus and St Bartholomew - headed for Armenia. There, they preached among the local populace and brought many new believers to the budding religion. St Bartholomew is said to have died a martyr's death in Armenia, either by beheading or by being flayed alive. In spite of governmental attempts to suppress the spread of Christianity, the religion continued to grow; it's not surprising, then, that Armenia became the first Christian realm, at the beginning of the 4th century AD.
