Himyarite Synagogue of the Chosen

"And you shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation."

Throughout the history of monotheism, many people have claimed to be their god's "chosen one". So, too, does Judaism believe, mostly, that its adherents are God's chosen people. Beyond this basic explanation, rabbis teach that Jews were chosen for a specific purpose. This is because God states in Exodus that "they shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation", which implies that the Jews were chosen to proselytise the true word of God. This idea influences all facets of Judaism, including daily prayer. The siddur, the Jewish prayer book, offers thanks to God for choosing the Jewish people, as does the Kiddush, a sanctifying prayer used during periods of religious observance.
